Why This Indicator Matters

Parental education strongly correlates with children’s academic achievement. Children of parents who lack a high school diploma may not have as strong a foundation when entering school, and may ultimately experience worse educational outcomes. Parental educational levels directly correlate with parental employment and earnings, and thus, overall economic security for the family. Children whose parents lack a high school diploma have also been found to have a higher risk of health problems, including being born with low birthweight.

Definition and Source



This indicator reports the percentage of women aged 15-50 who gave birth within the last 12 months by level of maternal educational attainment. The levels of educational attainment which this indicator reports are: less than a high school degree;  a high school degree or equivalent; some college or an Associate’s degree; and a Bachelor’s degree or higher. Note that this indicator does not capture the total number or percentage of births by maternal education in a given time period since the unit of analysis is restricted to women aged 15-50 who gave birth within the last 12 months at the time of responding to the American Community Survey.
