Definition
The School Breakfast Program (SBP) is a federally assisted meal program under the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free breakfasts to children every school day. Research has suggested that SBP's are associated with higher academic test scores, lower absenteeism from school, and greater class participation. This data provides the average number of breakfasts served in Connecticut during the academic year. It is calculated by dividing the total number of breakfasts served by 180 (the minimum number of days a school is required to be open).
Children not eligible for the SBP may purchase breakfast; therefore, this number should not be interpreted as a representation of the number of students eligible for the SBP.
