Why This Indicator Matters

Nationally, Medicaid pays for almost half of all births, yet covers a higher percentage of hospital stays for preterm and low birth weight babies compared to private insurance coverage.

This data set will help determine whether the rates of Medicaid financing of births will change in the coming years and will be relevant to the broader conversation of monitoring Medicaid coverage and maternal/child health outcomes.
