Why This Indicator Matters
Comprehensive prenatal care is essential to ensuring a baby's future well-being and maximizes both infant and maternal health. Mothers who receive regular prenatal health care visits have better nutrition, participate in more regular physical activity and tend to avoid exposing their babies to unhealthy substances such as alcohol, tobacco or lead. Mothers who receive inadequate prenatal care face the risks of serious consequences for both mother and baby. Mothers who do not get prenatal care are significantly more likely to have low birth weight babies or face infant mortality than their counterparts who do receive care. Early and adequate prenatal care is crucial for ensuring a healthy future for both mother and child.
